Solar Storm Alert: Powerful X-Class Flare Erupts, Impacting Radio and Space Weather (2025)

A powerful solar flare erupted from the sun over the weekend, causing a geomagnetic storm watch to be issued. The flare, classified as an X1.9 flare, peaked at 9:49 p.m. EST on Sunday, November 30, according to NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. This flare, originating from a newly emerging sunspot region, briefly disrupted radio communications across Australia and parts of southeast Asia on Tuesday. A coronal mass ejection (CME) also occurred, posing risks to radio communications, power grids, navigation signals, spacecraft, and astronauts. The CME is not expected to reach Earth but may still cause minor impacts. The Northern Lights may be visible in northern and upper states between New York and Idaho, though weather forecasts and a powerful winter storm may limit this possibility. Scientists predict increased space weather activity between December 1 and December 5 as the sun's sunspot region rotates to face the Earth.
