A bold shift in how you manage your electricity bill is here. Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) now lets customers switch to its Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff directly through the myTNB app, making enrollment simpler than ever. This option joins existing methods, including TNB’s official online portal and in-person signups at Kedai Tenaga outlets, so you can choose the path that fits your routine.
Here’s how the process works in the myTNB app. Note that you must be a registered account holder to use this feature. After opening the app, look for the ToU icon and pick the account you want to switch. You’ll land on a page that explains the scheme; tapping Start begins the application. The next page asks you to verify your account details, and finally, tapping Send completes the request. If you have a smart meter, TNB says the switch should be finalized within five working days. Without a smart meter, the switch can take up to two months because of installation requirements.
A quick refresher on the ToU scheme
In July, TNB rolled out an opt-in Time-of-Use pricing plan for all domestic and non-domestic low-voltage customers who have smart meters. The core idea is simple: pay less during off-peak hours and a bit more during peak times.
Peak hours are weekdays from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM (Monday–Friday), while off-peak hours run from 10:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Rates depend on your monthly usage:
- For households consuming up to 1,500 kWh per month, peak pricing is 28.52 sen/kWh and off-peak is 24.43 sen/kWh.
- For higher-usage households over 1,500 kWh per month, peak is 38.52 sen/kWh and off-peak is 34.43 sen/kWh.
Keep in mind these figures come from TNB’s official communications. If you’re exploring ToU, consider your daily schedule and energy habits to decide whether shifting more load to off-peak times could yield meaningful savings.
